Youtube may launch paid subscription for channels
The more popular individual channels may get the chance to charge for access to the content on their channel if Youtube goes ahead with the plan to allow it. The news comes from Adage.com that says Youtube will work with a select small group of channels who have shown good business in acquiring a large number or loyal followers. The report mentions channels Machinima, Maker Studios and Fullscreen by name, but would most likely to include more channels and even newer ones that yet have to be established but can show potential.
Lately Youtube has been making moves into being more channel focused, with pushing more channel content to users and helping partners in setting them up as well. A pay per view model is already in place for charging films and tv shows; paid channels would make it more of the cable paid channel access that is run the world over for TV. The expected price for channel subscription is between $1 to $5.
The subscription model may start by April with the smaller group of partners, who have the option of showing ads on the content as well as charging for the channel. More collections and libraries of videos and documentaries will also be made available via a channel subscription.
The new model would start of as an experiment for getting user feedback. A Google spokesman who confirmed the move to AdAge added, “The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we’re looking at that.”
