Facebook reaches 1 billion users

4 October 2012

Facebook and Mark ZuckerbergFacebook has hit the 1 billion mark this morning with the company announcing on its News Room blog site. Mark Zuckerberg wrote, “This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month. If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.” The site added 500 million users since from 2010, when the total for that time was 500 million also.

Facebook also released some more interesting facts and figures along with the 1 billion people on its network :-

  • 1.13 trillion “likes”
  • 219 billion photos
  • 600 million mobile users
  • 17 billion location check-ins and tagged posts
  • 140.3 billion times people have befriended each other
  • An average user age of 22
  • Top countries (alphabetical order): Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, United States

Facebook are haven’t yet made major in roads into markets such as Russia and China as of yet, due to some restrictions and other competing services. They should also have good mobile apps ready for regions such as sub-Saharan Africa where most people access internet via mobile and smartphones. Its nice to be able to have all that data about so many people, but Facebook are still looking for that way in which to utilize it in the most effective manner for themselves, developers, advertisers and its shareholders.
