Google buys Mac and iPhone email client Sparrow
Google today acquired Mac and iOS email client Sparrow. The sum paid for the software is undisclosed but thought to be less than $25 million. The mail app is popular on the Mac and iOS with users citing its simplistic approach to email making the experience more streamlined which is especially useful on smartphones with limited screen size.
A statement buy Dom Leca, CEO of Sparrow, was posted on the main page of the site saying, “We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience. Now we’re joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.”
Google’s own Gmail service has languished somewhat and Sparrow way of doing email would certainly help them. While Sparrow will continue to provide support for its app, its unlikely that newer versions will be released, but instead moving to Google to help with Gmail on the various mobile apps.
